Virtual Meeting
The Water Risk Department will hold its next virtual meeting (Zoom meeting) on 15 May 2023 from 14 - 16 h.
The focus will be on the United Nations World Water Conference, which took place in New York (USA) from 22-24 March 2023. Around 150 countries participated in the discussions and panels and adopted a "Global Water Action Agenda", which will contribute to the protection and availability of water as a resource - initially until 2030 - through a wide range of activities.
Currently, 660 projects have been pledged, 5 of them Germany intends to contribute [ Source: Press release of the BMUV of 23.03.2023 ].
- Implementation of the National Water Strategy:
On 15 March 2023, the new National Water Strategy was adopted by the Cabinet. It pursues the goal of making the German water sector fit for the future, guaranteeing water supplies in the long term in view of the challenges posed by the climate crisis, and improving the protection and sustainable management of our national water resources and water bodies. - Bilateral project with the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the International Climate Initiative:
The new Water, Energy and Ecosystem Nexus project will support the Democratic Republic of Congo from August 2023 to promote integrated water resources management to ensure ecosystem conservation, including major carbon sinks, adaptation to the climate crisis and multiple uses of water for the country's development. - Regional project with the Niger Basin Authority under the International Climate Change Initiative:
The new project supports the Niger Basin Authority to promote integrated water resources management among the riparian countries of the Niger Basin. The project will start in September 2023 and will enable the member countries of the Niger Basin Authority to better implement climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies regionally. - Bilateral project with South Africa under the International Climate Initiative:
The new project promotes low-carbon and climate-resilient water and sanitation in South Africa. Germany is supporting South Africa in making the water and sanitation sector more resilient to the climate crisis and thus ensuring long-term drinking water and sanitation supplies, especially for the poor population. Willingness to co-finance the UN Special - Representative for Water:
If appointed, Germany has declared its willingness to contribute financially to the financing of the position of the UN Special Representative for Water.

Next Meeting
In September 2023, the Water Risk Department will already mark its 10th anniversary and it should be celebrated a bit, so we are probably planning a presence meeting. You can find all the news about this on our homepage under the relevant event announcement.
