A view on the water from an unusual perspective - mining dewatering
Christine von Kleinsorgen, Head of the department mine water concepts, described in a very exciting presentation on 24 January 2022 the tasks that have to be mastered in the area Rhine-Ruhr, Ibbenbüren and Saarland for mining dewatering by the responsible RAG Aktiengesellschaft.
The handling of water has undergone a change in the process, as initially the protection of miners had priority during active mining. Today, after all mines have been shut down, the post-mining phase begins and the protection of groundwater and drinking water is now the top priority. Adits and shafts at a depth of up to -1,100 m NN are planned to be filled with water, as the mine water is no longer pumped out. In the long term, the water is planned to rise to a depth of about -600 m NN. A safety distance of about 180 m to the groundwater-bearing layers above and to drinking water sources is thus guaranteed, and all work is accompanied by a comprehensive monitoring network and a computer simulation.
The topics of energy consumption and water quality are also a focus of RAG Aktiengesellschaft and are part of their sustainability strategy.
